Mini Dwarf - Xmas Cup 2007 (Taft Flat Track)
Sat. Dec 1st – Race 1 of 2

Running at a new track was a little intimidating for the Mini Dwarf Drivers. Ok, let me re-phrase my statement. It was intimidating only for the first lap of practice. Then our awesome Mini Dwarf drivers adapted to the larger track and began to pick up speed with confidence and eventually began to run the big, wide 1/8th mile dirt oval full throttle. Pretty impressive for such young race car drivers, Good Job Boys…

After the Sky Diver Show and the two hour practice session, Yes, I said two hours. We began the show with the Mini Dwarfs 10-lap Heat Race #1 Cameron Dougen came out on Top with Tommy Velasquez III-2nd, Kameron Garofalo-3rd and Nick Velasquez-4th. We inverted the starting positions for Heat Race #2 and came away with the same finish as Heat Race #1.

Then came a big surprise for us Mini Dwarfs. The Taft Flat Track races mostly Quads & Motorcycles. They run their Trophy Dashes from a 4-wide, standing start. Once they see the green light they go. Well, they added a SPECIAL 4-wide, Standing Start TROPHY DASH for the Mini Dwarfs. It was definitely different for us and ended up being really fun. Again the finishing positions were the same as Heat 1 & 2.

Cameron Dougen said to me after his Trophy Dash win with a big smile “This trophy is way bigger than any of my Dad’s trophies”.
Both his dad & I got a big laugh out of his statement.

Ok, now time for the 15-lap main event, after being dominated by the Cameron & Tommy for the last 3 races. We inverted the field to give the Piston Division Boys a little bit of an advantage. Nick on the Pole, with Kameron on the outside front row. Well, that lasted about one corner. Tommy Velasquez III held off Cameron Dougen at the first corner. Those two battled hard for every turn on every lap for the lead. After 5 laps it was Tommy III, Cameron, Nick & Kameron.  The lead battle intensified with Cameron beginning to stick his nose in on Tommy III at every corner and down the straights. But Tommy III held him off. The crowd was starting to get excited as they could tell the lead was going to go down to the end. Third place began to heat up with Kameron getting closer and closer to Nick in the corners also. After 10 laps it was still Tommy III, Cameron, Nick & Kameron. Then came the excitement, Cameron had been getting more aggressive with each lap and then stuck both wheels on the very inside of Tommy III on turn 1, they both bobbled with Cameron coming out of turn two with the lead. Tommy III didn’t just give up; he battled down the back stretch until Cameron finally began to pull away after turn four. At the other end of the track battling for 3rd was Nick & Kameron. The intensity was building and finally Kameron blasted by Nick going into turn 3 and held that position until the checkered flag. What a great Main Event for all 4 Mini Dwarf drivers. 1st-Cameron Dougen, 2nd-Tommy Velasquez, 3rd-Kameron Garofalo, 4th-Nick Velasquez. After the exciting main event Cameron came over to Tommy III’s car and congratulated him on good clean racing. Wow, two young drivers knowing how to drive hard against each other and then giving each other a hand shake. It is nice the see the future of racing – race hard and then shake each others hand afterward. GREAT JOB DRIVERS...
